The purpose of the organization is to represent the interests of surveyors worldwide. It is a federation of the national member associations and covers a whole range of professional fields within the global surveying community. It provides an international forum for discussion and development aiming to promote professional practice and standards.

With the objective of building the capacity of academic institutions teaching surveying in developing countries, and of providing support in teaching and developing their curriculum more effectively Individuals, who are academic members of a department working with the full support of the department Applicants based in a surveying/geomatics/land administration academic programme that teaches surveying Applicants, who are also able to demonstrate competence in undertaking and delivering research – e.g. through publication, qualification or professional practice An individual, who is associated with a university (or similar), for a scheme for development and delivery of an area of the curriculum Travel for a training or university exchange (and then return and share this training) Wtih grants of up to 20,000 euro (spread over two years)
