The purpose of the organization is to represent the interests of surveyors worldwide. It is a federation of the national member associations and covers a whole range of professional fields within the global surveying community. It provides an international forum for discussion and development aiming to promote professional practice and standards.

PhD students registered solely in a surveying/geomatics academic programme that teaches surveying With scholarships of up to 4,000 euros (about DKK 29900) to PhD students PhD students in a country listed by the World Bank as a low-income, lower-middle or upper-middle income economy The above in cases where the following are met: PhD students who have had a paper accepted by a peer reviewed international journal based on their doctoral research project Applicants who are the lead author. The paper should be co-authored with their supervisor Applicants, who have not submitted their final thesis at the application deadline Successful applicants who will qualify for a further grant of up to 3,000 euros to attend and present a peer reviewed paper at a FIG conference
