The purpose of the organization is to represent the interests of surveyors worldwide. It is a federation of the national member associations and covers a whole range of professional fields within the global surveying community. It provides an international forum for discussion and development aiming to promote professional practice and standards.

Emerging researchers on the threshold of their research career Applicants based in a surveying/geomatics academic programme that teaches surveying in a country listed by the World Bank as a low-income, lower-middle or upper-middle income economy Applicants who have an established record of published research Applicants with experience in managing postgraduate students A focussed research project A grant holder, who is expected to conduct the bulk of the research themselves (it is not a research manager’s grant) Projects, where the development of highly qualified personnel (HQP) should be a major component of the project Postgraduate students who are full time students, and this grant may financial support for their degree studies. However the principal investigator should be intimately involved in the work With research grants of up to 40,000 euros spread over four years
